What do you meme?

I have never been on 9gag before. But I appreciate the community they started and I adore what the Internet’s humor has come to be. Memes. They’re smart, funny and apt. I love them hence this ode to a pop culture hero, the meme.

Memes are classified as part of internet pop culture.  Our understanding what a meme is, as defined by wiki is“”an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture taking the form of a video, picture, hyperlink, GIF ect ..It may be just a word or phrase, including an intentional misspelling…[they] tend to spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, or news sources. They may relate to various existing Internet cultures or subcultures… Some notable examples include posting a photo of people lying down in public places (called “planking“) and uploading a short video of people dancing to the Harlem Shake.”

9gag, considered to be the home of all pop cult memes. It started in 2008 and today has over 250k follows. It averages 3,421,987 views an hour.

But seeing understands so here

Now that we are all on the same meme page, why and how have memes  become so successful? Studies suggest that ever changing pop culture and humor have lead to meme takeover. They function as a easy to digest visual representation of current situations in everyday life. They are able to capture a general reaction and put them forward in an endorphin releasing method that people receive well.

There is a dark side to memes too. They are often used as a means of roasting situations, places, people ect. These are called trolls. And this can sometimes be crass and distasteful. Also they are a direct hit at a situation, place, people ect- which is kinda mean, but like meme, Y U So funny. But leaving aside my dark humor loving ways (eish) .

Where do memes go from here?

The internet’s dynamism has forced meme culture to evolve constantly. Just like the definition has evolved, the nature of the meme too has changed.  The traditional impact famed temple has changed to the sleeker Helvetica on white format.  Famous 9gag faces like college senior and scumbag Steve are being phased out. 90’s sitcom truths, real truths and celeb tolls, like the Kanye one below, are what we see and what we love now.

The meme has cemented its place on the internet and in popular culture.  And I can not be happier.
